CEDAR SPIRITS (The debut full length NOW AVAILABLE for purchase...)

$16.00 (US) / $20.00 (World) PPD.
Paypal address: chet@glassthroatrecordings.com
(For Paypal orders please add an additional 10% to overall total.)
Hey folks, please excuse the crappy photographs above, however I'm pleased to finally announce the debut self titled full length release from Cedar Spirits. The entire layout was foil stamped using a smoked matte brown foil upon an obscure deep grey stock. For those of you who may have copies of the Alethes debut and Ruhr Hunter "Moss & Memory" releases back in 2006, you have a good idea of this absolutely beautiful craft. Packaged once again in Glass Throat's signature "6 x 6" six panel deluxe gate fold.

A Digital formatted release is also now available at our Bandcamp store here

There has also been a bit of talk regarding possible west coast performances in support of this offering come MMXIII. However nothing is confirmed.

Cedar Spirits
“Self Titled Debut” (GTR-019)

The debut full length journey from Cedar Spirits features a
collaborative offering from two Pacific Northwestern ritual folk
artists, known to the community as novemthree and
Cycle of the Raven Talons (formerly ruhr hunter).

From the opening  invocation; “Oh spirit Sun, guide
and protect us. Oh spirit Rain, cleanse and inform
us. Oh spirit Earth, nurture and feed us. In this
life, I start anew....”

Through this organic and purely acoustic presence,
It becomes self evident the Cedar Spirits express a
growth of spirit, light of life within a deeply respectful
musical craft. A craft focusing a humble, apologetic
nature through a richly intent filled medicinal musical.
An honoring of the Mother through every note and
every word.

A collective practice, a declaration of vows through
important, careful stewardship and human well being
towards a bio-region in need of love, strength, respectful
participation and vital protection!

“To the keeper of the woods, under moonlight
stood, deep within your earthen womb....
please forgive us.”

CEDAR SPIRITS & FEARTHAINNE (Next two releases for Glass Throat Recordings)

Wanted to share an update regarding Glass Throat Recordings #019 and #021 catalog releases. Both releases will have an initial pressing of 500 copies. If I move them, I'll of course press another 500! Thanks to the Digital world, I've had to cut my pressings in half now, thus I'm not sitting around a bunch of boxes collecting dust. Which I'm currently doing. A shame, but the way of things...Please don't forget about the art and craft kids. You really have no idea what your missing with G.T.R. releases.

Onward....

Cedar Spirits (GTR#019) has been pressed and awaits an obscure grey paper stock we have chosen to be shipped from the mill. This has set back the release date once again sorry to say, as I've been informed the paper will take some time to arrive. Once here, we will then begin the unique foil stamping process. I just received a sample of the dark "matte smoked brown" foil that will coincide with said dark grey stock. It's quite AMAZING looking and almost has a Grey upon Grey feel to it. A visual concept Rachel and I have discussed for some time.

I am now shooting for Samhain to be the official release date for both the "6x6" six panel deluxe gatefold CD, as well as the Digital Download of this debut album. The cover art viewed above, is the exclusive cover art to the Digital release, setting it apart from the outstanding physical CD craft soon to be offered. The D.D. will be available exclusively through our bandcamp digital store here:

I'm quite pleased to finally mention I have completed the drum, percussion and hammered dulcimer elements for Fearthainne's next beautiful and deeply moving offering, a 43 minute ascension entitled "Knowing" (GTR#021). I've enclosed a couple studio pics from the hammered dulcimer sessions.

We will master the album the first weekend of October and shortly after, with Joshua's blessing, I'll have a stream available through our Bandcamp store for all to hear. An official release date for both the "6x6" six panel deluxe gatefold CD, as well as the Digital Download of this album is pending. Perhaps it's safe to say "Knowing" will be offered in the early cycle of MMXIII....More to come!

The cover art viewed above, is the exclusive cover art for both the Digital release and the outstanding physical CD craft which will feature a soft touch aqueous flood. The very same printing effect for those whom may have copies of the recently released "Light the Fires!" offering. The stream as well as the official D.D. will be available exclusively through our bandcamp digital store here:

 "Fearthainne’s second release, entitled “Knowing,”
is an unflinching inquiry into the ontological
status of the human animal trapped in postmodernity,
confined within civilization’s tangled web.

A series of wonderings meant to initiate
the wandering of the soul, this aural journey
facilitates questioning and the freedom inherent
in unburying truth. Querying, rather than surety,
opens the door of our cage and gifts us gnosis.
For, one cannot know who they are until they
realize what it is they were meant to be.

Acoustic guitars, violin, drum, dulcimer,
and voice are the implements of this craft,
as Fearthainne eschews the use of electrified tools.
A textural passage through emotional sonic terrain,
we clear a space for the unfolding of human majesty,
in the process welcoming home the battered and
bruised creature we are. We will never settle for the
paucity and degradation of modern life, demanding
instead the authentic humanness and depth that
are our birthright.

The unending dark of this epoch
ushers in a new illumination, as through this night
we discover the single answer to our question:
“Can we live again after what’s been done?”

GLASS THROAT RECORDINGS (Next 3 releases plus an interview with Blistering.com!)

An honest shock if there has ever been one, Blood of the Black Owl’s Light the Fires! caught us unexpected with its ritual vibes and earthy opulence. Though initially coming off as quite peculiar, repeat listens revealed a carefully constructed and ultimately overwhelmingly atmospheric walk into the abyss of the outer wilderness.

“Band” mastermind Chet W. Scott was kind of enough to engage in an eloquent chat with me over his history, inspirations, and all manner of idiosyncrasies that make Blood of the Black Owl the enormous beast that it is.
-Blistering.com

I )Admittedly I’m a newcomer to your rather unique take on metal and a question that kept gnawing at me as (I imagine) many other new listeners: where did you get your start and how did it come to this?
Wonderful, I'm honored and humbled to have you take this journey with me Matthew. Well, wish it could be more exciting for you all, but the very short story of this reflects the vast majority of the now juvenile self titled debut, as well as the 3 song demo that came before it, both of which were actually conceived as a younger fellow and written back in 1995 while living in NYC. I never had the option of recording this music back then, as I didn’t have my own gear or studio space, nor was I able to step into a “professional” recording studio financially at the time. I also had no interest in forming a band, thus never shared the work with others. Anyhow, straight through the years to follow, finding myself exploring vastly different musical paths, which often fell into this deliriant sort of apocalyptic noise art and ritual ambient soundscape, I never lost touch with these initial ideas. Ideas consisting of simple riffs and song structures that fell into a sound akin to the bands of the time. Bands such as Winter, Neurosis and Darkthrone to name a few, were absorbed on a daily basis and tremendously effective upon my being.
Years came and went, then within the early season of 2004, having some of the tools in place and the desire to unlock and explore these older ideas became a reality, with the juvenile and horribly produced self released “Svart Ugle” 3 song Demo. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to establish a decent studio and the gear I’ve needed to see it through. The intent grew tremendously richer, as I began to journey this sound as a conduit of personal ritual and growth, spiritually woven within this artistic expression. Thus, the debut “Self Titled” full-length was offered in 2006, along with a vital and deeply more inspirational name change.

II) What’s the process behind most of the music you create? Is it a fairly free-flowing experience or a step-by-step process? From what do you draw most influence, be it musical, the world, or otherwise?
It varies depending on intent and state of being at the time of craft. "Light the Fires!" just happened! Seriously, I can't explain it nor believe it is my place to do so. I couldn't let go of my acoustic guitar during this river of spirit, which the entire collection was written on. Mystery was behind this offering in full, as most of my solo crafting, especially regarding the ritual work of Cycle of the Raven Talons (formerly Ruhr Hunter), which now crafts deeply and directly into my Homo Spiritualis being.

III) The Metal presence on Light the Fires! at least as it’s usually defined sonically, was rather sparse. Is it losing ground over time within your sound or is that just how it worked out on this album?
Just the way it came to pass this time and I'm so thankful and deeply content with its presence.

IV) “Caller of Spirits” is a very elaborate, intense piece of music. It was apparent as soon as play was hit and that voice billowed forth that something special was at hand. Do you care to break down that song and what went into it?
The opening Galdr "Caller of Spirits" was an offering through deepening intent and strengthening of spiritual vows, honoring the six directional spiritual path. It is important for my being to acknowledge the spirit world, prior to offering a collection of medicinal musical out into the void. I had done this once before under the Blood of the Black Owl Sigil with the opening invocation "Spell of the Elk," featured on the second full length "A Feral Spirit" collection. "Caller of Spirits" focused intent upon a binding runic mark that had traveled within me for a long time. After meditation upon this unified gathering of Elder Futhark and finding an understanding within its presence, a ritual was conceived and captured audibly. This particular time, through the consumption of earth tongues to usher being forward, light was revealed even further upon these very specific marks becoming this binding sigil as a whole. Thus, the layers of Galdr in the piece becoming one spiraling voice. Sacred horns, flutes, frame drum, Elk shaker and a Bear bladder rattle were implemented as well. It's also important to note that thus far, all Galdr offerings have coincided with specific Moon phases, as well as very specific times of year.
When the double vinyl format is released for the "Light the Fires!" collection, a 14 minute companion Galdr entitled "Spirit Canoe (Hailing Father Sky)" will replace "Caller of Spirits" to open the journey. Also, within the vinyl format will be exclusive artwork to reveal this binding oaken sigil I spake of.

V) In most things I’ve seen you’re simply listed as playing ‘all instruments’. Could you break down what some of those were and why? Any guest musicians?
Blood of the Black Owl is a personal endeavor. Like the debut self-titled album and the second full length "A Feral Spirit," "Light the Fires!" is solely of my own craft and spirit and looks to remain this way indefinitely. Due to popular, miss guided information on-line, many folks seem to not realize it’s just little old me as a solo artist handling everything and not an actual band. Blood of the Black Owl has never been a band, nor will it ever be. James Woodhead was the only "guest musician" I've ever worked with under this musical sigil. James contributed to both of the split releases with Celestiial (2007-08) and At the Head of the Woods (2011), as well as the third full length offering "A Banishing Ritual (Into White)." Daniel Ellis Smith Harrod is another name you may see pop up in relation to this endeavor. However, Daniel has never contributed music, as his role lies within an inspirational and vital lyrical craft.
In some regards, to the spirit within Cycle of the Raven Talons, compositionally the Blood of the Black Owl musical sigil seeks to tell stories of awareness, through the heartbeat of the Mother and breath of the Father. Instrumentally, the Cycle of the Raven Talons musical sigil is exclusively organic and acoustic, focusing deeply within ritual through primitive crafting, using sacred and sometimes ancient acoustic instrumentation, while Blood of the Black Owl unites the primitive with the modern. Thus, sacred horns, frame drums, shakers, rattles and native woodwinds are implemented and woven heavily within all modern instrumentation such as: acoustic and electric baritone guitars, fretless bass, mountain / hammered dulcimers and various other modern tools.

VI ) Any chance of you unleashing in a live setting this year? How would you pull the rather complicated sounds heard on album together?
As previously mentioned above, Blood of the Black Owl is just a humble solo endeavor and will look to remain that way. I’ve never intended for this voice to be on display within a live forum. So I can safely say a Blood of the Black Owl live performance is never going to happen. For the record, the two men I’ve mentioned prior, Daniel and James, are the only two folks I would consider to share this journey as a live spirit. However the reality is, neither of them, nor myself for that matter find ourselves in a position to handle the time, demand and devotion it would take to bring such an endeavor to life. So with that said, my apologies to the folks whom may have wished for something of this nature.
It may be of interest to note that "Caller of Spirits" was initially intended, to offer as a Cycle of the Raven Talons related Galdr and was ritually performed in its entirety within a festival showcase back in 2009. There are plans for a few performances once the Cycle of the Raven Talons “An Offering To Mystery” 2xCD has been released on Glass Throat Recordings. For those who may find a stronger connection within the ritualistic and purely acoustic element, or Galdr work of the Blood of the Black Owl voice, I would recommend seeking a Cycle of the Raven Talons performance. However, said live rituals are most likely to manifest privately within a wild location here in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.

VII) There’s still a lot of year to go in 2012, what’s up next on your plate that you can talk about in the months ahead? Any grand declarations to present to the world?
Well, most folks may not realize my own Glass Throat Recordings is co-releasing the Blood of the Black Owl "Light the Fires!" deluxe CD with Bindrune in August. I'm hoping to find a home to release "Light the Fires!" for a 2xLP vinyl format as well. There is a bit of interest thus far, however nothing confirmed. So I'm not sure if that will make a 2012 release or not. We shall see? Next up for G.T.R. is the debut CD release for a novemthree / Cycle of the Raven Talons collaboration entitled "Cedar Spirits" that is scheduled for an Autumnal Equinox release. Then the second Fearthainne offering entitled "Knowing" will finally see light. I'm hoping for a Yule release on that one, however I'm feeling sometime early 2013 might be more realistic.

Blood of the Black Owl's 4th full length offering "Light the Fires!" rises and shines upon lifting the spirit's veil, through the spiritual teachings of the six directional path and the sacred breath within us all.

A soundscape to help surface, understand and heal an ever increasingly egoic nature of programmed disconnection, a sickness we as a species carry within an unbalanced circle of spirit, rooted deeply into a fragile cyclical self. It seems, we are no longer a human being and have become the human doing! The crafting of "Light the Fires!" offers a medicinal musical, aiding in the clearing of poisons found to feed this ego. A ritual of musical restoration seeking balance towards this great and vast four quartered circle of life.

As the feathers of this sonic sigil uplift to the breath of Father Sky and the blood drips stewardship to the Mother's womb, the Blood of the Black Owl is offering to hold up a mirror to the self, facing the shadows of ego head on! It is to share the light, through the understanding of dark, allowing growth and reflection upon being once again.

An honoring voice awakening to the survivalists, to those connected ones aware and to the seekers of the flame whom fight the silent battles....

Light the Fires!
_____________

"It is a humbling and shamanic experience, a stark one far removed from anything but nature itself. Chet W. Scott the one name we are given behind this has really crafted a sound that is historic and transcendental."
-Ave Noctum

"If there were ever an argument to be made for the creation of ‘aboriginal metal’ this would perhaps be the best evidence for it."
-Blistering.com

"It conjures up a reverie-like hypnotic feel that strips away the superficiality of modernity, allowing for unhindered emotional interconnectedness."
-About Heavy Metal

"Most of what you’ll find is a trance-inducing, 1970s-prog-embracing spiritual journey that examines nature, the state of the environment, and humankind’s role in protecting and demolishing it. One of the more thought-provoking, evolutionary in all of metal. It’s a breath-taking performance."
-Meat Mead Metal

"Blood of the Black Owl, slowly unravel the oppressive walls of modern existence surrounding you and conjure you back to times of ritual, a communal interface with the natural and metaphysical. Numerous emotional climes are explored, from mystery to misery and back again, often beautiful despite themselves and Chet W. Scott's intentions to suck the black vapors from the listener's soul, devouring them with droning confidence.
-From the Dust Returned

"To the outright wooded shaman and cunning man, it's just another wild night in the cool of the cove, we must see where we are being taken, by whom or what? I am brought to the sensation of donning animal skins...no, that's not pure enough...going werewolf naked and running through overgrowth. I am stone cold sober and indeed hawk like in my own discernment presently...this is real music, you will understand, damn you!"

With permission, I've also included a recently published interview under the Blood of the Black Owl sigil conducted by Germany's Black on-line publication. There are many wonderful and amazing interviews within their archives and I'm deeply humbled and quite honored to have been asked to be a part of that. Thanks so much for taking the time to read folks.

--Chet W. Scott

"Binding together something wonderful that shows a superb style and tactic, Chet W. Scott is a talented artist in many terms. With projects such as Ruhr Hunter (now known as Cycle of the Raven Talons), Blood of the Black Owl and The Elemental Chrysalis, the more difficult the path for others, is the path that Chet takes. He always has his spiritual equipment at the ready within his luggage. It may be apparent that all these factors are responsible allowing his musical offerings to showcase with such grandeur. With this, Chet grants fans a seldom look into his world. How it corresponds within its self, which rolls, themes, such as spirituality and seeking, or even Neurosis play. It shows only that they are strong and undivided to move one's nerves..."
--Black Online Germany (MMXII)

Interview:

What was the initial motivation to begin your project as BLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL? What lead you to choose the name?

In my younger years, I’ll specifically point out that I devoured the sounds of Switzerland’s Celtic Frost. Then in 1991, everything changed when I discovered Winter’s “Into Darkness”. That album took all I adored and felt from Frost’s sound and slowed it all down. An album, a breakthrough discovery that to this day, in my humble opinion, is vastly ahead of its time! It is a sound and a feeling that I’ll continue to be obsessed with till my passing.

I’m not sure if anyone even knows of this, nor would really care for that matter, as I’ve never found it relevant to speak of until now. However, the vast majority of the now juvenile self titled debut, as well as the 3 song demo that came before it, were actually conceived and written back in 1995 while living in NYC and listening to nothing but Neurosis, Darkthrone’s “Panzerfaust” and of course Winter’s “Into Darkness.” I never had the option of recording this music back then, as I didn’t have my own gear or studio space, nor was I able to step into a “professional” recording studio financially at the time. I also had no interest in forming a band, thus never shared the work with others. However, straight through the years to follow, finding myself exploring vastly different musical paths, which often fell into this deliriant sort of apocalyptic noise art and ritual ambient sound scape. My desire to explore those “initial riffs” and a heavier more structural musical themes, have always been locked within and never forgotten.

Years came and went, then within the early season of 2004, having some of the tools in place and the desire to unlock and explore these older riffs, this inspired sound I’ve mentioned, became a reality with the horribly produced and self released “Svart Ugle” 3 song Demo.

The name change was derived from a totemic awareness through my own spiritual values. However, the moniker was inspired through intense dream scape, perhaps a sigillum of sorts, as I’ve had a few more years to digest said vision, through deepening experiential study and ritual practice. In short, the role of this “Black Owl” or Strix Nebulosa was the spirit of a beloved old friend, making his way back to me after many years of distance and sickness. This beautiful old friend by the name of Daniel Ellis Smith Harrod, is a man I hold in the highest regard within my life. A man, whom offered his deepest and most personal spirit, reflecting on these years lost through the art of written word, thus inspiring the two albums to follow: “A Feral Spirit” and “A Banishing Ritual (Into White)”. This spirit brother, whom I felt came to me in need, flew to a branch just above my reach. As I looked in honor of this spirit, feathers began pulling away from the skin, floating off to the six directions, carried upon the breath of Father Sky. The flesh turned to ash and flaked, falling downward within a whorl. As each cinder skin reached my spirit, they lay like spittle’s of blood upon my being.

The Owl is a central role for you to play, what excites you about it?

The Strix Nebulosa, or common name Great Grey Owl, is an inspiring rich spirit that offers intense magical understanding to those very few, whom truly work within shadow of the spirit world. The Owl holds a totemic value, seeded deeply within the elder Northern and Southern tribal teachings. Teachings of a spiritual path, I myself seek and forever walk steadfast. This totem is one of many keepers upon this path.

Could you briefly point out your working process? How do you find concepts, ideas and how do you realize them?

The Blood of the Black Owl craft has grown to focus upon lifting the spirit’s veil, through the spiritual teachings of the six directions and the sacred breath within us all. It is a voice to help expose, understand and heal an increasingly egoic nature of programmed disconnection and sickness we as a species carry within. We are no longer the human being and have become the human doing. This craft looks to work as a musical cleansing, clearing the poisons I’ve found to feed my own ego, through disconnection from the self! Blood of the Black Owl is here to hold up a mirror to the self, facing this ego head on! It is to share the light, through the understanding of dark, allowing growth and reflection upon being once again. It is also a voice to the awakening, to the survivalist, to those connected ones upon their own paths, and to the seekers of the flame whom fight the silent battles.

Do you get to know any deeper insights about yourself while recording?

Overwhelmingly yes.

Do you think that expression finds the artist or is it the other way round? What are your experiences as BLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL?

Isn’t it both? We are all quite capable of expression and in much need of it.

Your work with BLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL displays many moments where your interests in mystical and spiritual themes are revealed. What do you think about these themes and how did you find these questions fit to your work?

Under Mystery, deep within my heart, this Homo Spiritualistic being is a great wheel that forever turns. Within this cyclic flow of life, four quarters of great awareness become the foundation of being and this foundation will always be within need fire of much strength, love and respect to fulfill and balance said quarters throughout my remaining days.

One can have the impression, that the releases of BLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL have a conspiratorial note to it. It almost sounds as if something should be awoken, something that slumbers deep in the earth. Would you agree to this statement?

Conspiracies not at all, but from time to time a metaphoric presentation of a personal political awareness, an intellectual observance of truth that is quite clear to those willing to open eyes and listen! I believe it was George Bernard Shaw whom said “The power of accurate observation is commonly called Cynicism by those who have not got it.” With that said, there is a triumvirate of monotheistic power that exists within the world, a sickness looking to extinguish what we truly need to release in our heart. There are those, whom have been programmed early on, to be in fear of their own self and this vital release. They have become fear itself and spread it like wildfire! Awareness is everything now and will separate the survivors from the victims. Awaken the primal flame, awaken the breath and Light the Fires!

The German author Botho Strauss had once formulated that when he was interested in something, especially something deeply rooted in humanity, was described almost magically similar to a describing a notion. Can you start to say something about these sentiments?

Not familiar with the work of Strauss, however humanity is nearly lost to me and there is not a day that has gone by where this is not overwhelmingly clear! Time to be rendered helpless again, to be born of Earth and Sky, where we look to steep these vital roots of what is called “Humanity” and drink this cleanse of self while directing cure to re-evolve.

Late last year your split with AT THE HEAD OF THE WOODS was released on Handmade Birds. What can you tell us about how this album came into being? Are there specific moments that are stuck in your mind? What was the process of recording like?

Well, it’s a fairly long story, but in short, both offerings within this split CD were recorded during the third full-length album “A Banishing Ritual (Into White)” sessions, and were initially planned to see a release just after on vinyl. Clearly that never manifested. This period of time for both James Woodhead respectively and myself for that matter, revealed quite an intense window within our lives. I had invited James into the fold, as I had already worked with him under the Black Owl sigil for the release of the B.o.t.B.O./Celestiial vinyl split. With Daniel Ellis Smith Harrod’s blessing, the man whom inspired the album through written ritual, I asked James to assist the compositional process of “A Banishing Ritual.” Along with this, he also contributed to the first and third movements of the split offering “Visions Of Strix Nebulosa” on the Handmade Birds label.

How did you get to working with R. Loren and his Handmade Birds label?

Mr. Loren and I have been corresponding now for a while. Rich opened the door to our relationship by asking for visual assistance regarding his “White Moth” project. A visual project crafted through a subdivision of Glass Throat Recordings entitled Glass Throat Visions, a design firm run by myself and life partner Rachel Boaz-Scott. So in short, I just happened to mention these split offerings in a passing e-mail to R. Loren and he expressed interest in hearing the work.

Conventions don’t seem to be important for you. How do you get the impressions that are expressed within your releases?

Self awareness and the vitality of being through Mystery.

Can it be discerned from your under the surface, background sounds and ideas, that they show an interest in sending subliminal messages?

No, I believe my spirit is quite exposed within the craft now and very much audible to those willing to listen. Some of my juvenile offerings were certainly more vague at times. However, as I grow as a man, so wills the craft.

You have a project with James Woodhead called THE ELEMENTAL CHRYSALIS. What can you tell us about the history of this project?

Mystery brought us together back in 2004 I believe it was, yeah, because the debut album “A Calocybe Collection” was offered summer solstice of 2005. Upon meeting James, I had this obsessive sound in my head that needed to come out and Mr. Woodhead was there to help open the mental flue. I had imagined exploring the sorrowful emotion of Funeral Doom, but with purely acoustic instrumentation. So, sort of a “Funeral Folk” esthetic soaked in heavy psychedelic effects. The vision was to weave this approach within a vastly inspirational sound to us both. A sound of hallucinatory ragas from a deeply spirited and completely ahead of its time progressive underground of the late 60’s and early 70’s European movements. Like Sweden’s Algarnas Tradgard or England’s Third Ear Band meets the masterful funeral weep of Finland’s Skepticism unplugged! There is also this lingering spirit within the Chrysalis craft, an antiquated sound like a dusty Morricone movement at times. With the release of our second full length “A Dark Path To Spiritual Expansion” back in 2007, things became much more dank and you’ll begin to hear this spirit taking form through lethargic wet earthen blues. James brought a tremendous blend of classical and blues arrangements to the mix, which just opened so many amazing musical explorations! Yeah, it’s really quite a strange, yet deeply warming and comforting experience to perform and listen to these recordings.

What can you tell us about Glass Throat Recordings? How do you get into contact with the artists? Does friendship play any role?

Glass Throat initially began as a forum to release my own crafts, to have some sort of “control” of my own work and what hands it fell upon. Of course, along came the digital revolution and that flew out the door real quick. However, Glass Throat has since become an artistic commune if you will, a community sharing the very same intent and visionary flow. More importantly, it has become a beautiful home for a family, who have come into my life on a personal and deeply spiritual level.

I’ve never looked to Glass Throat Recordings as a conventional label or business. It was never a part of the initial intention. None of that has ever interested me at all. When it becomes art as commodity through capital gain, or how many units are moving and that “cookie cutter sound” revealing a tired “quantity before quality” issue, then I believe it soils everything in its path, including the intent of an artist and those whom claim to “stand behind” what is offered to the world. It’s so sad to see and hear what I feel, is more prevalent than ever within what was once called the “Underground” and the word “scene” itself, through genre specific traps become the beginning of such sadness. I’d like to think the intent behind G.T.R. has walked a solitary path and has been pure since 1997. Perhaps it’s sensible to say that Glass Throat Recordings fits the “Boutique” descriptive? I don’t know.

What can you tell us about the creation of the artwork through these releases? What role does the haptic element play in general?

It is just as important to visually embrace the seeker with one congruent artifact, as the visual ritual must fully embody the audible experience. Rachel and I strive with every ounce of our being, to produce professionally crafted, beautifully printed artifacts that offer highest quality custom offset print production. This process will include several techniques using UV inks upon obscure and rare paper stocks, including spot varnishing, foil stamping, letter pressing, embossing & debossing.

What releases do Glass Throat Recordings have in the pipeline?

MMXII will bring the Digital and CD release of Blood of the Black Owl's fourth full length "Light the Fires!" This will be a co-release with Bindrune recordings.

The debut Cedar Spirits full-length Digital and CD release will be offered shortly after. You can hear a teaser trailer now posted on the opening page of the Glass Throat main site. Cedar Spirits is a collaborative voice featuring Rachel Boaz-Scott, Pythagumus Olaf Marshall and myself. Your community may already be familiar with the music of singer songwriter Pythagumus known as “Novemthree.” The Novemthree spirit yields an absolutely beautiful, calming and deeply touching musical journey. A journey I could not recommend enough to your seekers. Perhaps this is the right time to mention, that I have the honor of contributing spirit towards the next Novemthree full length as well.

Also, at some point this year, we will see the next full-length CD offering from Fearthainne. I’d like to mention if I may, that I received a tremendous honor when Joshua asked for me to contribute the drum, percussion and opening ritual to this release. I’m currently in the recording process regarding these elements and will have more to announce through the G.T.R. blog in due time.

Six years in the making thus far, the long awaited full-length “An Offering To Mystery” from my own Cycle of the Raven Talons (formerly known as Ruhr Hunter) is gaining much clarity and should hopefully see a release late MMXII into early MMXIII. Once again, there is much more to come regarding this epic offering.

A few more things boil within the cauldron. However for those truly interested, I would suggest joining my blog for exclusive announcements and anything relevant will be announced exclusively through the G.T.R. blog in due time. There seem to be several misleading and incorrect “sources” regarding my work and related out there, as I hold absolutely no connections to social networks, so please look for anything relevant through this official source only.

http://www.chetglassthroatrecordings.blogspot.com

Do you consider yourself to be part of a culture or more or less of a counterculture?

Neither.

What music or art is inspiring you at the moment?

I’m constantly blown away by the various underground sounds of the Finnish community. A vast majority of what I listen to seems to come from this wonderful land. However, at the time of this interview, this office has heard nothing but the recently released: Pallbearer “Sorrow and Extinction” debut, 40 Watt Sun “Inside Room” and the solo works of Patrick Walker, Tenhi “Saivo”, Coyotzin “A three part Mystical Saga” and the amazing Desert Lotus “cult” offerings featuring “Ocotillo”, “Hysperia” and “Dr. Eckasha Aah Ahalaa.” I’ve also recently discovered a Wreathes release and can’t stop listening to that as well. Last but certainly not least, everything POPOL VUH all of the time! I also must admit that my own “Light the Fires!” continues to offer so much. Perhaps a strange thing to read, but honestly through Mystery, I was able to craft an album, I was always finding myself waiting for another to offer, a craft I’ve needed to journey for a very long time! Like a swarm of bees within my mind, it came out so effortlessly. A “D.I.Y.” in the most purest of sense!

As far as visual medium, I’m growing a deepening obsession with the shamanic visionary folk and mandalic offerings of the Southern quartered Huichol Indian tribe.

Have bands like NEUROSIS had any influences on your work?

There really is no other craft that exists, other than the works of Popol Vuh, I take more personally into my being than that of Neurosis. I’ve been listening to the tribe now since “The Word As Law.” However, it wasn’t until I was able to see them perform on the later portion of the “Souls At Zero” tour, that everything I had known and felt about deepening musical art and expression, had become in every ounce of my being, completely and utterly changed forever! Neurosis changed my life in so many ways and I still feel this strongly to this very moment! Listening to a record, but more importantly seeking the journey through their live offerings, has and always will be a deeply humbling and tremendously sacred experience!

Are there artists with whom you would like to collaborate?

Florian Fricke (Popol Vuh) without a doubt, would have been number one on the list! I would be deeply honored to work with Norwegian Vardlokkur Einar Kvitrafn Selvik as well. There is another individual I would add to this list, however it turns out I’ll be collaborating with this inspirational spirit and I can’t express how deeply honored I am to be doing so. More to come, as I’m not at liberty to speak of this union quite yet.

Many individuals look forward to being famous or well known for something, what are you looking forward to as an artist? What continues to inspire and motivate you as an artist?

Personally, I find those things to be unsettling. The craft, a musical ceremony through mystery to the Vardlokkur, Is held forever close, focusing deepening song as sacred knowledge. It has beautifully become a fountain of energy, a conduit through a vital cyclic self, keeping my spirit’s intent and spiritual integrity clear. It is this gift, a path, being intact without faltering towards ego, that my spirit continues to walk steadfast. A stream woven exorcise of personal anger, sadness, sickness and sorrow that cycles back towards the light, with deep powerful strength, healing and blossoming love. To share this personal cyclic flow, with those also willing to explore the vast self and vital breath we all keep within is my motivation. This is why I’m here.

Are there havens or places to go to relax in your city? If yes, can you describe these places? Which types of refuge are maybe even holy for you?

Simply, there is no haven for me in any city! I no longer wish to be a part of their society. It has become quite evident that to be surrounded by human sickness and man made artifacts, perpetuates my own imbalance of self. The rural outer woodlands, mountains, lakes, rivers and ocean of the vast Pacific Northwest region are deeply sacred for my spirit. I make sure to retreat within them and spiritually re-charge as often as possible. I’m in the process now, of obtaining land within one of these removed and off the grid locations. It is also a dream of mine to visit the very few old growth forests or “Mother’s Wombs” we have left within the world. However that dream seems to be slipping away from me, as I continue to remain within their society.

Can you give our readers hope for live shows with BLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL in Europe or especially in Germany in the near future?

Well, I’m sorry to those whom wish for something of this nature, as a Blood of the Black Owl live performance is never going to happen. As you already know, it’s just little old me handling everything and not an actual band. More importantly, I’ve never intended for this voice to be on display within a live forum.

I will mention, there are plans for a few ritual performances once the Cycle of the Raven Talons (formerly known as Ruhr Hunter) offering has been released. For those who may find a stronger connection within the ritualistic and purely acoustic element, or Galdr work of the Black Owl voice, I would recommend seeking a Cycle of the Raven Talons performance. However, said live rituals are most likely to manifest within a wild location here in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Taking into consideration, the logistics of offering this overseas is next to impossible. I would love to offer this to European folk trust me, as their support has been ten fold greater than here in the states. Not to mention, I’ve been invited many times throughout the years, to perform privately and within festivals throughout Germany, England, Netherlands, Finland, Norway and Spain. But again, I just can’t see how this would all be possible without the financial and logistical backing to support it.

What can you tell us about your future plans?

Well, I’m not a liberty to speak in full detail as of yet, however I’m in the beginning stages of another Cycle of the Raven Talons offering. This ritual offering will focus its full supportive intent towards one highly endangered totem. One hundred percent of the proceeds regarding this medicinal musical, will go towards the fight against those, looking to oppose the life and land of this deeply important spirit. As a deeply vital element towards the strengthening of this offering, I will look to stay for sometime, learning from the First Nations of this area, in support of the fight for this endangered spirit and the native stewards of this crucial and sacred land for which it slumbers. My journey will take me to one of the most vital Old Growth forests within the world, located within central British Colombia. This location is the only known place within our vast Mother, where this being can be found.

More to come regarding this at: http://www.chetglassthroatrecordings.blogspot.com

Also, there is going to be an Arnica / Cycle of the Raven Talons collaborative ritual at some point. It is going to be quite an honor to work with my spirit brothers from Spain.
I’ll mention here first, that a currently untitled 5th Blood of the Black Owl album is already underway…

Final words…

I’m deeply humbled folks. Thank you both very much for providing this forum to discuss my craft. I’m truly honored to have such wonderful support and interest. Also, thank you to those who took the time to read this interview and support Black Online Germany.

TWIG EATER RITUAL CRAFTS...

Greeting folks,

First, thank you for taking the time to read. Also, much warmth for showing such amazing support since launching this blog and a newly developed digital store.

Well, with that said, I felt it was time to humbly introduce some of the arts and crafts that exists within the shadows of my many musical and digital design offerings. I've been deeply focused on other creative endeavors outside of music and I felt compelled to embrace all of these under one umbrella, thus the creation of the "Twig Eater Ritual Crafts" moniker and logo was born.

For a number of years now, through ceremonial offerings and altar work, I've also ritually practiced on a daily level with sacred burnings or spiritual cleansing. Combined and strictly using these sacred four gifts from the Mother: White Sage, Cedar, Sweet Grass and Lavender, I've been fortunate to understand, respect and connect deeply within the process of growing and crafting my own cleansing bundles. I have truly felt the warm healing and peaceful medicine their sacred breath offers my spirit. A spirit that is known to engage spiraling depression, anxiety and several physical ailments, including an eating disorder introduced by the poisoning mental abuse of all previously mentioned and a societal food supply that clearly moved far, far away from the Earth's breast to the test tube.

But I digress...

The White Sage and Sweet grass used within my bundles are strictly purchased or traded directly from the first nations or indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. For roughly 10 plus years now I've been attending an annual gathering locally to purchase supplies and hear the Native Elders speak. There, other tribes from Southwestern regions attend and bring with them sacred sage. I personally find an offering of sage is best embraced from the hands of the Native. Not only out of respect for all tribal nations, but regarding a deepening spiritual respect for the plant & the region it comes from as well.

The Cedar used within my bundles is one of the many sacred gifts of the Pacific Northwest. The cedar is gathered from fallen old growth branches after the winds of Father Sky have offered them back to the soil.

The Lavender is grown myself with much love, honor and respect and I have now begun to grow my own sweet grass to honor, strengthen and deeply charge the cleansing that much more. May great Mystery see this through...

I have made several bundles for very close friends, family and as a part of the "Moss and Memory" limited edition dens. I would never consider selling the cleanse by modern standards out of respect. But I will certainly consider trades for crafts, music, art and other sacred offerings I find a connection towards.

On a different note, I've been burn carving amuletic sigils into hides. They have been presented as protective house warming, wedding, friendship and ritual gifts to close friends for several years. However, I'm now considering crafting these for others if they wish. Below are a few decent pics of some helms I have crafted for folks. I typically imbue the center of each wheel with an agate, or something of relevant nature to the piece and fill the entire carving with a mixture of ground elk antler & sage. I'll work with any color hide of choice but limit the totemic value towards Elk, Moose, Bison and Deer for now.

Here was a wedding gift that was carved into a white African Water Buffalo hide. The sigil was imbued with eight Porcupine quills, as well as a centering agate within a sacred wheel of antler/sage powder. The feathers are Crow.

This piece was a friendship offering for a beautiful spirit carved into a North American Bison hide adorned with Crow feathers. The centering piece features well being made from gathered rabbit teeth.

The next piece was a 40th birthday gift for a very close friend. Carved into North American Bison. The feathers are both Crow and Blue Jay. The braids of strength represent the four sacred directions, color coded to honor the four great races. The braids are adorned with Coyote leg bones, painted with the Elder Futhark to coincide with the teachings of the sacred four directions...From my personal study and perspective.

This last piece is inspired by Ægishjálmur and was imbued with an Irminsul amulet. Carved into North American Bison, this piece found its way into the hands of my spiritual brothers from Finland. The feathers are once again Crow & Blue Jay with the addition of old growth cedar.

Finally, this year I have plans to craft my own clay ritual cleansing bowls and look to fire the crafts within a traditional Native open fire pit. I've also become deeply interested in etchings and plan to craft a few sigils within this medium as well. So if all flows well within these undertakings, then I'll look to share this art with those interested in such artifacts.

Once again, thank you for your time. If interested in the burn/carved wheels, please feel free to get in touch with your own personal intent within a runic sigil and anything you wish to adorn the artifact with and a quote will be provided.

HONORING LISTS OF MMXI...

Hey folks, yeah I felt like it would be fun to jump upon the old bandwagon regarding the whole years end list thing. Anyhow, these lists are not necessarily specific to a release or publishing that occurred within the year of 2011, but more of a personal musical year in review...what got us through & kept us going. Not simply on a musical level either, but in relation to all "events" from said year in review.

My warmth & may MMXII cycle into light with these resonating words from my spiritual mentor Loren Cruden: "When you have let go of everything, seen what is in deepest shadow & kept moving in your alignment with good, you know something that is truth.".

HENRY LAUER (HEX MAGAZINE / IRONWOOD)

Top Ten Sanity Saving Albums for 2011 (Not necessarily 2011 releases):
+ The Curious Tide (Michael-John Azzopardi) - Sublime trance folk that nourishes both my heart and my inner music nerd. This man's subtlety and inventiveness never cease to amaze me; and his interpretations of traditional folk songs are truly liberating.

+ Ghosts of Memory (The Veil) - Long awaited debut by Australian doom/shoegaze/neofolk/black metal/new wave geniuses. I've seen these songs performed live so many times over the years and they've carried me through some dark times. Its wonderful to finally have them on a CD.

+ Heritage (Opeth) - The more progressive these giants get, the more I love them. Totally out of this world atmosphere, composition, performances...

+ Loki Bound (Greed & Rapacity) - Well it won't be available until 2012 (on Milam Records) but co-creating this voyage into insanity was a profound honor; getting to perform it live (even the passage of 64 bars with each a different time signature!) was truly epic. I feel sick every time I hear it, which is precisely the intended effect.

+ Storm Over Sea (Ironwood) - Our most recent release and a point of reference I return to again and again as I dream my way into a new life over the raging, sublime sea.

+ Pentangle (all of it) - Burt Jansch died this year, but what a profound legacy he has left behind.

+ Time Is The Sulphur In The Veins Of The Saint (Abigor) - Can anyone say Magnum Opus? Will this band ever fail to outdo itself? If only one per cent of the black metal bands out there had this group's level of passion, creativity, vision, and integrity...

+ Silver Moon Slumber (Key) - This Finnish excursion into folky hypnagogia just plain makes me feel happy - and sad - and happy - and sad - in just the perfect equilibrium.

+ Cult of Youth (Cult of Youth) - The furious passion and boundless energy of this album - its atmosphere, courage, and relentless joy de vivre - truly inspires. And seeing them live - wow! Surpassed all of my (stratospheric) expectations.

+ Lateralus (Tool) - This album will always be the watershed of my musical existence. I know it is fashionable in the underground to hate Tool for their success and I don't care; for me they are the Masters. Once again Lateralus has been my sensei, guru, and healer.
