RECHARGING THE SPIRIT, MENDING THE HEART...

Looking back, the Shaman's diagnosis is.... "nature deprivation." Indeed! I said. A general prognosis "human doings" of their own lost and frightening societal facade have unknowingly become as a whole. Personally, I work very hard to maintain a solid foundation as a human being, not only for myself, but for the one true friend I've chosen to share this life path with. As a seeker, this intent filled process connects my spirit deeply within the spiraled meditative journey, Seidr and the indigenous shamanic practices of the six sacred directions. This Vardlokkur and earthen steward has found his strength, his purpose! Understanding my place within the vast Wyrd and the work for which I must offer through it has certainly become heightened. Now it is truly understood. Not simply through the healing arts of a Medicinal Musical, I spake of the devotional being, the sacrificial giving back, the honoring and action of WARmth! That every day battle for true love in the heart and the elusive flame rekindled primordial self. WARmth is waged upon those whom aim to destroy Mystery's song! However, I digress.... Still, as this most recent retreat observed, I enter my 41st year, finding my spirit a part of this vast "mare's nest" of disconnection, nature deprivation and perpetual disregard. Well, it had caught up with me once again. It had been over a full cycle of the great wheel's rotation since my last commune under veils of cedar and pine. My physical and mental status not well, as this tine severed long ago from Grandfather Elk falls upon environmentally poisoned ground. The daily toils of remaining a part of their society, absorbing the false security of modernity and its troubling urban sicknesses.... Breaking me down slowly. Not to mention, the work of patient ear, a living confessional (if you will) of friends and family penetrating my psyche like push pins to a map. Ah, It had been far too long since my last sacred retreat into the beautiful solitary wilderness. As always, the kiss of Skuld and her forever mark of Nauthic black fire, filled my blood with an intense necessity to become being. A being within the vast altar of the Mother, to reflect and alter!

The photograph above, which reminds me a bit of an Edward S. Curtis, was taken at the cabin adjacent to the humble lodge Rachel and I called home. When I say home, I truly and honestly mean home. In so many ways this is all I long for. So unbelievably correct coinciding with the man I've become. This was my dream come true. Yet, a slap in the face knowing what I must go back to. Perhaps one day Mystery will shine upon and open a path back to her? For now, I'll pray in one hand and defecate in the other to see which one fills up first.

Okay, well another facet of this retreat was to capture several recordings. Recordings of the environment yes, but also frame drum, flutes and vocals to be implemented into the next Blood of the Black Owl offering entitled "Soaring the Shadow Spiral". The many drum meditations and flute work turned out brilliantly and I look forward to beginning the process of composing around them, as well as placing said captures into existing movements already recorded. The above and following photographic elements were taken during this process. Courtesy of Rachel's stealth woodland eye.

Well, thanks for taking the time to read this little window into the recent. As mentioned in a previous blog, the new album is nearing completion and I'll have more to announce in the coming weeks.

Thanks for your time and interest,
-Chet W. Scott

GLASS THROAT NEWS TO END THE YEAR....

Greetings folks, it has been sometime since I've had anything relevant to write.

GLASS THROAT RADIO
Episode IV (November) of the Glass Throat Radio podcast was published. However, I was unable to afford a December showcase. Podomatic will soon be deleting earlier shows in order to allow space within my account. So for those of you who may have missed out on the first couple of shows, feel free to get in touch and I'll send you a show of your choice. For those of you who care and would like to see this humble little show continue, please feel free to click the Paypal Donate button within the podomatic page to keep things going. Hopefully I'll be back come the new year? That now depends on you...We shall see.

FILM
On a different note, I've been asked to contribute a couple of songs from my own 2006 release of "Moss and Memory" towards a feature documentary entitled "Goodwin's Way" from Director Neil Vokey. The film is currently in production and I'm deeply honored to help score such a project. I can only hope our connection will blossom towards future endeavors. Perhaps video work, which has already been mentioned regarding my own Blood of the Black Owl spirit. Time will tell. Thank you Neil.

 MUSICAL CONTRIBUTIONS
Recently I've contributed guest spots on three upcoming releases and one recently released album. That album is the second full length offering from Seidr entitled "Ginnungagap." I offered vocals for the ending half of the last track entitled "Sweltering II: The Pale Blue Dot In The Vast Dark."  I want to thank the band for believing in me to handle such a tremendous task. I'm humbled. You can find their album here.

The first of three upcoming releases hail from Portland Oregon's Weather Veins. Henry Lauer's debut full length album is currently in production and it was an honor to have been asked to share in something so deeply personal for Henry. Thank you brother. I performed a minimal amount of Galdr and Hammered Dulcimer within this collection.

The second is yet another debut full length album currently in production. I was honored to contribute Voice and Flute to Of Hearth & Home's currently untitled offering. Of Hearth & Home is the solo acoustic work of Australia's Robert Allen (Encircling Sea, Vaiya). Thank you Rob for allowing me to share. What an honor.

Last but certainly not least, I was asked by brother Pythagumus of novemthree to contribute towards the two songs I performed live with them years back. Both songs "Embracing The Storm" and "This Is My Home" will feature as a part of a vinyl split with Spain's amazing Sangre De Muerdago. The offering is entitled "Braided Paths" and I humbly offered Galdr, minimal guitar and Hammered Dulcimer. I plan to stock all of these releases when they become available here.

BLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL
I've recently felt tremendously inspired and have found my spirit deep within my sacred space. The journey and process of lifting the veil to find the heart has yielded intense experiential practice full of human growth, being and deep magical development. The sound console and recording space have become more of a conduit in this process than ever before, offering the gifts of a different kind of medicinal musical. Perhaps a sensible progression one might say from the "Light The Fires!" collection, yet a progression to be quite unexpected from the spirit known as Blood of the Black Owl. The vast majority of this collection, finds raw and stripped down acoustic works to be offered. I'm excited to announce I have finished six crafts thus far, under the album's banner of "Skadwojanan Sehwanan."

SKADWOJANAN SEHWANAN
 (Album art currently unavailable)

I. Spirit Canoe: Hailing Father Sky (14:00)
II. Gawaraz (6:07)
III. Two Feathers Become Nauthiz (16:21)
IV. Kenaz: An Illumination Of Black Fire (10:10)
V. Primordial: Flame Rekindled Self (8:08)
VI. Well~Being (10:51)
VII. A Memorial Song (6:28)

There are currently more crafts being written and recorded for this collection. So this is in NO WAY a complete album listing. Song placement is subject to change as the record develops.

"Spirit Canoe: Hailing Father Sky" was recently released as a part of Heathen Harvest's "Samhain Work II" compilation series. Click the compilation's cover art to hear the track in its entirety.

Regarding "Skadwojanan Sehwanan", I'm unsure as to where this collection will find a home, I'll get to that bridge in time. Currently I'm feeling it's appropriate to release it myself. With that said, I'm also unsure of the formats for which this collection will be published through. I know what I wish for, but that's up to the publisher/label's budget. I can't imagine most will want to take a chance on this one anyway, so we shall see.

MERCHANDISE
There will be t-shirts, sweatshirts, patches, etc. available through the Glass Throat Store exclusively come next year, as I'm in the process of figuring out what that exactly entails. My apologies to those of you who had asked for a "Light The Fires!" design to coincide with the album. That clearly never came to be. The new designs will represent the sigils and vision for which Blood Of The Black Owl seeks currently. Also, look for the very first Cedar Spirit t-shirt and patch design as well.

IN OTHER NEWS
With that said, Cedar Spirits will hopefully begin to focus on live performances in 2014 as well as material for a new album. More to come.

The Elemental Chrysalis is still active and recording our first collection of songs in seven plus years. The album is entitled "Feathers Of Lunation" and James and I are roughly half way through the recording process. More to come.

There will be a severely needed retreat come January where I'll spend some lengthy time within the Olympic National rain forest. Among other things, I'll be filming for B.o.t.B.O. as well as recording new Cycle Of The Raven Talons within the wild environment.

Thanks to those of you who actually read all of this. My warmth to you all and have a beautiful Yule.

-Chet W. Scott

40 WATT SUN (live)

Last week a few lucky souls were treated to an intimate live show from the mighty 40 Watt Sun. Terrorizer’s José Carlos Santos was in attendance, and here’s what he thought…

40 Watt Sun + Coma Wall
@ The Black Heart

It’s been a week since this little unassuming acoustic event took place, but nevertheless its effects have been immense and surely all those present that filled up the Black Heart are still reeling from it, so a week’s spiritual retreat was needed before putting pen to paper with any sort of professional distance to it.

Because 40 Watt Sun appearances are few and far between, there is a tangible air of anticipation in the air as the hour approaches (particularly because we’ve been promised new songs on top of everything).

40 Watt Sun (Photo: Cláudia Andrade)

With hearts collectively skipping beats, the quiet and shy-looking trio of Patrick Walker, William Spong and Christian Leitch launch into new song ‘Marazion’ without so much as a previous word, and the impact of its aching beauty is immediate – though no one has heard the song before, lines such as “I’ve loved you more than that” are already felt as old favourites due to the band’s elegant, sparse and deeply heartfelt performance. Such is the case for the other three new songs unveiled tonight, all of them already feeling like old favourites to the enthralled, silenced audience. Unlike most metal or metal-related gigs, the connection between musicians and audience is established without the need for any verbal encouragement, and that bond is even stronger due to the intimate acoustic (or semi-acoustic, as William’s bass is electric) setting, and there are more than a few sneaky tears being wiped from faces as the familiar ‘Restless’ and (especially) ‘Carry Me Home’ echo through the crowd.

After this, nothing could be more perfect for an encore than a version of Songs: Ohia’s ‘Lioness’, simultaneously a fantastic last reminder of why 40 Watt Sun are one
of the most essential bands in the English underground today and a classy homage to the departed Jason Molina who left us last March. He would have loved it.

FEARTHAINNE INTERVIEW (Plus review)

I believe this may be the first interview conducted regarding the Fearthainne spirit. It was initiated by our friends over in Deutschland and I want to take a moment to thank both Daniela and Sabastian Lobstedt for their continued support on all things Glass Throat Recordings. Here is a link to said interview as well as a review (use Google translation) of the album and thanks for taking the time to check it out.

Also, here is the first of hopefully many reviews to come regarding Fearthainne's most recent offering entitled "Knowing" courtesy of Jake Moran over at:

Thanks Jake.
